Brett Hilder – The artist
Brett Hilder is an Australian photographer and traveller whose work encompasses fashion,
portraiture (these include the likes of singer Brian Ferry, actress Marisa Berenson, actor Mel
Gibson, Nobel Prize Winning Australian Novelist Patrick White and Spanish actress Lola
Marcelie) and landscape photography, film and theatre.
His work, described as a deeply personal exploration of the sensual and romantic, for
the “Vogue magazines” of the world, showed the intrinsic and unique value of his
photography.
In the 1970s Brett worked in London and Paris. His assignments took him to Mexico, the
USA, South Africa, Kenya, Eritrea, Indonesia, Ireland and Spain. He continued his
photography on return to Australia, including work for the Sydney Theatre Company ( the
actress, Cate Blanchett was a recent joint Artistic Director there), and made a film of the life
of Italian photographer Tina Modotti.
He has exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, the Josef Lebovic Gallery and
in Barcelona and Taos (New Mexico). In 2008 Murdoch Books published “Another Time,
Past Created”, a poetic journal with photographs of his travels through the Americas,
Europe and Africa, and “The Sea of Chance” a travel memoir of his struggle to bring his
Eritrean wife to Australia.
With various International Publishers at present is another book “Havana – A Love Story” by
